Meet Dr Iwona CYBULSKA from UCLouvain at our online Master Session #4 (the last one!) on 29 October 2020 at 10AM

Iwona CYBULSKA is currently working as an Assistant Professor at UCLouvain (Faculty of Bioscience Engineering/Earth and Life Institute). Her research focuses mainly on the biorefining of locally available agricultural residues to produce value-added bioproducts. Before coming to Louvain-la-Neuve, Iwona completed her post-doctoral fellowships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA) and Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (Abu Dhabi, UAE). She obtained her Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering at South Dakota State University (Brookings, SD), working primarily with lignocellulosic biomass pre-treatment methods for bioethanol production. Her M.Sc. is in Chemical Engineering (Poznan University of Technology, Poland) and Industrial Biotechnology (Aalborg University Esbjerg, Denmark). Her research achievements are demonstrated in over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

Methods for protein extraction from extremophiles

Abstract
Protein extraction from halophyte species was performed using several methods, following a green fractionation step of the fresh succulent biomass, producing green juice and fibre. The investigated methods for protein separation included liquid-liquid extraction with two aqueous phases applied to the juice pressed out of the fresh biomass and membrane filtration (MF/UF). Protein extraction and its partition coefficient are influenced by the pH, ionic strength and salt type along with the polymer or surfactant concentrations, which were examined and optimised. The extraction efficiency of the protein was assessed by total nitrogen content analysed using a modified Dumas method. Based on the calculated distribution coefficient (concentration of the product in the extract/concentration of the product in the raffinate) the optimal method will be chosen for future scale-up.
