After obtaining his Masters in Business Engineering from Solvay Business School (ULB) in Brussels, Guy Hélin became active in the development and commercialisation of accounting software packages in the Netherlands, while also holding a position as part-time Assistant Professor in accounting and finance at Solvay Business School.
He has over 20 years’ experience in consulting for SMEs and large groups (in Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Switzerland) during which time some of his missions involved senior management positions in France (Alcatel Group) and in Belgium (hospitals).
Additionally, Mr Hélin became part-time CFO of the ULB spin-off Delphi Genetics, from its foundation in 2001. As its CFO, and later CBO, he was in charge of the follow-up of an exclusive licensing agreement with Invitrogen on a first selection technology. He also negotiated the non-exclusive licensing agreement of StabyExpress selection technology with Sanofi Pasteur (June 2009) and GSK (September 2010) for human vaccines, as well as the broad licensing agreement with Merck/MSD (October 2012). In his role as CBO, he actively promoted the technology by attending partnering meetings and conferences in Europe, Asia and North America.
In 2013, along with Dr Philippe Gabant (a co-founder and former CEO of Delphi Genetics), he founded Syngulon, a startup that develops original genetic technologies using bacteriocins.
Topic Title
Improving industrial fermentation: An R&D case study
Abstract
Tereos is the largest producer in Europe of ethanol derived from sugar-beet and wheat. Syngulon is a synthetic biology start-up developing genetic technologies using bacteriocins - anti-microbial peptides secreted by bacteria. Together they set up a R&D partnership, which is supported by Wallonia, anf which purpose is the development of genetic control for improving industrial fermentation for the production of ethanol. Weekly samples were taken, over a period of one year, from 5 industrial plants. Metagenomics and biological analysis enabled the identification of microbial contaminants that have a negative effect on yield due to the much faster growth rate compared with yeast used for ethanol production. The latest results will be presented during the conference.
