Meet Dr Sébastien CAJOT from Celabor at our online Master Session #1 on 10 September at 10.00 AM

Dr. Sébastien CAJOT obtained his PhD in Chemical Sciences from Liège University in 2012 with expertise in Polymer Sciences, more specifically the design of drug delivery systems elaborated from biomaterials. He joined the CELABOR team in 2012 as head of the Packaging Department, and since 2016 has been in charge of its Biomass Valorisation Platform – Extraction Department. The department is currently involved in various national and European projects focusing on biomass valorisation, in particular the extraction of high added-value compounds in the fields of food, feed, nutraceuticals and cosmetics.

Topic Title
AgriWasteValue, transforming agricultural by-products and residues into high added value compounds

Abstract
In spite of the difficult economic context in Europe over the last few years, the cosmetic and nutraceutical industries have continued to significantly grow. These sectors are characterised by strong consumer demand for a return to natural products made from local resources. At present, the bulk of natural actives currently being used in cosmetic or nutraceutical formulations is imported into Europe, while in fact a great biodiversity exists - particularly in the North-West Regions - that generates large amounts of residues that are not being fully exploited for the sourcing of natural actives.

The aim of the Interreg NWE AgriWasteValue project is the integration of agricultural by-products and residues into a circular economy using innovative methods for identifying valuable ingredients and environmentally-friendly extraction and modification procedures, which are easily scalable. The inherent concept of the project involves the setting-up of new durable integrated processes to convert the agroforestry residues of the European North-West Regions, more particularly Belgium, Luxembourg, France, The Netherlands and Germany, into products with high-value bioactive agents and bio-based chemicals for their use in key industrial sectors.
