Tony POUPLY holds an MSc in Health Nutrition from ENITBA (Bordeaux Sciences Agro) - France. He has 20 years’ experience in fermentation processes, mainly in pharmaceutical and food applications. He has been Product and Process Support Leader in Fermentation Technology for Tereos since 2016.

Improving industrial fermentation: An R&D case study
Abstract
Tereos is the largest producer in Europe of ethanol derived from sugar-beet and wheat. Syngulon is a synthetic biology start-up developing genetic technologies using bacteriocins - anti-microbial peptides secreted by bacteria. The purpose of the R&D partnership, which is supported by Wallonia, is the development of genetic control for improving industrial fermentation for the production of ethanol. Weekly samples were taken, over a period of one year, from 5 industrial plants. Metagenomics and biological analysis enabled the identification of microbial contaminants that have a negative effect on yield due to the much faster growth rate compared with yeast used for ethanol production. The latest results will be presented during the conference.
