Meet Dr Rodrigo LEDESMA AMARO from Imperial College London on our online Master Session #3 on 8 October 2020 at 10AM

Dr. Rodrigo LEDESMA-AMARO is a lecturer at Imperial College London in the Imperial College Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation. He runs a lab of 15 researchers with interest in the development of synthetic biology tools for metabolic control, the engineering of microorganisms for bioproduction, and the creation of synthetic microbial communities with applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.

Title of the topic
Synthetic and Semi-Synthetic Microbial Communities for Bioproduction

Abstract
Over the last few years, a growing interest in creating synthetic microbial communities with defined behaviours has emerged. Such microbial communities are expected to overcome some of the current limitations of strain and metabolic engineering. Diversified task can enlarge metabolic networks, reduce burden and maximise production. Recently, synthetic biology tools have been developed to create and control such behaviours (McCarty and Ledesma-Amaro, 2018). Both synthetic and semi-synthetic communities with enhanced bioproduction capacities are being developed. A few examples from my lab will be presented in the talk.
The theoretical potential of microbial communities to improve bioproduction, when, and how they can outperform clonal population still need to be elucidated. Ongoing research worldwide is expected to shed light on this question over the coming years.
