Meet Alex MICHINE from MetGen - Finland, on our online Master Session #2 on 24 September at 10 AM

Alex MICHINE, M.Sc., MBA has worked for over 25 years in a number of positions in the Life Sciences industry.
He has founded and successfully run 3 Biotech/Cleantech SMEs, and in 2008 became the founder and CEO of MetGen.
MetGen is a pioneering industrial biotechnology company with a proven capability to design, develop and produce highly effective tailor-made enzyme solutions. The company puts particular emphasis on applying enzymes to the transformation of lignocellulosic biomass into sugars and beyond, thus enabling the renewable chemical.
Alex has relentlessly been promoting future technologies in the bioeconomy and has been an active spokesperson for the great potential of cross-disciplinary collaboration. He has endorsed cooperation for bioeconomy in various forums. Recently, MetGen won the Frost and Sullivan European Industrial Enzymes Technology Innovation Award and in December 2019 Alex won the prestigious Most Innovative Bioeconomy CEO Award.

Topic Title
Debottlenecking Biorefineries – Solutions for Economic Feasibility

Abstract
Industrial lignocellulosic biomass processing generates high volumes of diverse lignin streams. Valorisation of these streams is challenging due their heterogeneous chemical composition, recalcitrance, and poor solubility. Efficient fractionation, depolymerisation and activation of lignin will lead to the formation of new value chains in the biorefinery sector with the production of bio-based products such as coatings, binding agents, fillers, special chemicals, etc. Current lignin depolymerisation methods often include harmful chemicals and/or require harsh conditions which promote unwanted reactions or degraded reaction products. Therefore, the development of scalable and sustainable strategies for industrial lignin valorisation will lead to the success of biorefineries.

Each Master Session will take up to 2 hours from 10 AM till noon and will be themed according to the following specific subjects:
