Meet Prof. Dr. Angélique LÉONARD from ULiège, on our Master Session #2, on 24 September at 10 AM

Prof. Angélique LÉONARD obtained her degree in Chemical Engineering (1998) and PhD in Applied Sciences (2003) from the University of Liège -ULiège. She was employed by the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) from 1998 to 2009 before becoming a Professor within the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Liège - ULiège with a chair in “Chemical processes and sustainable development”. She headed the department from 2011 to 2015, and then became director of the Research Unit in Chemical Engineering. Her research interests focus on the convective drying of deformable porous materials (including sludge), sludge treatment (dewatering and drying), and X-ray microtomography as a tool for characterising the texture of porous materials. She also leads a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) team with over 15 years’ expertise. LCA-related work includes environmental product declarations (EPDs), LCA of processes, and training in a number of fields: chemical and energy industry, waste management, biofuels, the agrifood sector, building materials and batteries. She has authored/ co-authored over 140 refereed research publications and around 120 conference proceedings. She also cooperates as Referee on some 15 international journals.

Topic Title
Bio-based products: A good or bad idea from a life cycle perspective in comparison with fossil equivalents

Abstract
Bio-based products are often seen as a way of reducing fossil fuel depletion and/or of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This was the original idea behind the promotion of biofuels in the EU. Nevertheless, a holistic approach must be adopted in order to avoid pollution trade-offs. This is the strength of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. By quantitatively evaluating many different environmental impacts along the whole life cycle, LCA allows for an objective comparison between a bio-based product and its fossil counterpart. Some case studies will be presented in order to highlight the complexity of developing real sustainable solutions from an LCA point of view. In the case of bio-based products, the agricultural phase is usually critical because of the use of fertilisers. These require a lot of fossil resources for their production and generate field emissions contributing to eutrophication and climate change.

Each Master Session will take up to 2 hours from 10 AM till noon and will be themed according to the following specific subjects:
