Meet Prof. Wim SOETAERT and find out what the success factors of biorefineries are about !

Prof. Wim SOETAERT heads the Centre of Expertise for Industrial Biotechnology and Biocatalysis (InBio.be) at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University. His research group is active in the areas of industrial biotechnology, biocatalysis, fermentation science and engineering.
He is the founder of Flanders Biobased Valley, a public-private partnership to promote the development of bio-based activities in the Flemish region of Belgium. Since its creation in 2005, Flanders Biobased Valley has quickly grown into one of the main growth centres for the bio-based economy in Europe, with over 500 million euros already invested in the port of Ghent.
Prof. Wim SOETAERT is the CEO of Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant in Ghent, an independent, state-of-the-art facility that operates from a laboratory level to a multi-ton scale. Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is a service provider for process development, scale-up and the custom manufacturing of bio-based products and processes.
Prof. Wim SOETAERT is also the chairman of Inbiose, a spin-off company from Ghent University that is active in specialty carbohydrates.

Introduction to biorefineries and their critical success factors

Abstract
The key aspects of successful biorefineries will be highlighted, starting with their basic functioning. An overview will be given comparing petro-refineries and biorefineries, describing their general features, technical aspects, history, and development model. The implications of raw material cost and supply will be addressed, comparing fossil and renewable resources in the past, the present and the future. Other aspects will cover the used technology base, the integrated use of different technologies, and the implications for the conversion efficiency and total use of resources. The influence of product diversity on competitiveness will also be discussed as well as the implications of the scale of operation. The critical success factors of biorefineries will be deduced from the basic question: what can we learn from petro-refineries that can contribute to successful biorefineries. The presentation will close with a vision, and perspectives, for the future.

 

Each Master Session will take up to 2 hours from 10 AM till noon and will be themed according to the following specific subjects:
